Deep
Natural, cover for Michelle's brilliant new album
deep
natural swirling, gritty blues grooves
against good-rocking gospel
and the free-floating sounds of dub

mighty sound!
"...you
can describe redemption, sonically, with music, in a way that
a preacher doesn't even get a chance to."

The
new album is out! Deep Natural! It's the first new release from
Michelle Shocked in five years and will be followed (at intervals)
over the next year by reissues of her complete catalog in "extensive,
deluxe editions!"
Deep Natural (see cover art at left) comes packaged with an innovative
added-value disc of contemporary instrumentals (Dub Natural). Deep
Natural is a bold, beautiful album that confirms Michelle Shocked
as one of the unique artistic voices of your time; Dub Natural serves
notice that she is as much a musical visionary as ever.
about Michelle Shocked
From the beginning of her career, Michelle has demonstrated that
she is one of the strongest and most widely acclaimed performers
in contemporary music. With combined sales of 1.5 million units
and years of consistent touring to sold out audiences coast to coast,
her fan's have shown they take the world "loyal" literally.
When Shocked was just 16, she ran away from her oppressive home
in East Texas. She spent many years living on the edge of homelessness
and squatting in abandoned buildings in New York and San Francisco.
At one point, Shocked's mother wrongly committed her to a mental
institution, where Shocked was forced to undergo shock therapy --
hence, her stage name.
"In
the cutthroat world that is the music industry, Michelle Shocked
stands as somewhat of an anomaly -- someone so real, so totally
herself, that she is just as comfortable singing gospel in a black
church in South Central L.A. as she is talking to David Letterman.
She is so sure of where she's from that she seems to be at home
everywhere, a feeling that translates into her music as well --
she has experimented with influences from all over the musical map,
from folk to jazz to bluegrass, without ever betraying her own musical
roots." (Cynthia Joyce, Salon Magazine)
