LARRY NORMAN, oil on canvas ![]() David Goatley at work in his Vancouver Island studio One of the first impressions I have of David Goatley, he is standing on a very tall scaffold during the final stages of a twenty-foot tall painting of Christ bleeding onto the rooftops of Jerusalem. This was, after all, the English painter who had gained some notoriety for painting a triptych crucifixion, with modern combat soldiers in camo-gear nailing Christ to the cross while a group of self-righteous clergymen look on. It has nearly gotten him kicked out of a number of exhibitions. It's difficult to categorize David's work. He is a brilliant portrait painter, brilliant in every application of the word, in a master-artist manner of speech. He is also a lyrical painter, and his canvases, the result of a sojourn in India, testify to that aspect of his work. Today David Goatley's work hangs in some quite perstigious locations, and his value as a painter has skyrocketed during the time that I've known him. Good thing that we've known each other for a few years now. The works that I own, gifts of the artist, would certainly be unafordable to my pockets, and more difficult for David to find time to paint, even if he wanted to express such generosity. We had the privilege of working on a film together, in the winter of 1998, and our friendship was secured. - Pennyhead One of my first
