GOAT
WOOD silver print; april 2001
I
took this photograph in the woods above the Nisqually Basin on the Puget
Sound. As strange as it seems, the real goat (I'll
let you decide which is which) was tethered to a post less than 50 feet
from his wood-goat friend. Even though the sun was warm, and the west-
facing hill bathed in light and forest dust motes, I experienced a sudden
chill encountering this petrified creature. Wood Goat seemed from
an ancient and mystical place and time. His living goat companion and
I
had been drawn, somehow, to this encounter, or realization. It will remain,
for a long while, my favorite and most haunting image.
